Benjamin Fifita Makisi is of Tongan & Samoan heritage. He began opera with classical singing lessons early in his life. He pursued this passion through university, earning a Master of Performance (Opera) from the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a Bachelor of Music (Performance) from Victoria University of Wellington. He furthered his training in New York, London, and Italy.
Benjamin has received numerous national and international awards. He performs with various opera companies, symphony orchestras and luxury ocean liners, earning praise for his musical integrity and stage presence. His impressive career includes sharing the stage with renowned artists like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Dame Malvina Major, and the late Sir Howard Morrison. He was also honored to perform at Sir Edmund Hillary’s state funeral, broadcast worldwide.
Known as the Voice of the South Pacific, Benjamin excels in popular classics, opera, musical theatre, and traditional Polynesian melodies. Based back in New Zealand, he continues to travel globally, showcasing his passion for opera and supporting young Māori and Pacific musicians.
